NSWICA International Infection Prevention Week
Competition Winners 2011
To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW) from the 16th to 22nd October, and the practice of Infection Prevention & Control in NSW Healthcare facilities, the NSW Infection Control Association (ICA) held a competition this year that was open to all health care workers.
Entrants were asked to write in 50-1000 words (essay, prose, song, rap, dance) what they or their ward has done to improve infection prevention in the past year. They were asked to be creative, comply with code of ethics and advised that there were extra points awarded for collaboration.
The theme of IIPW this year was ‘Infection Prevention is Everyone’s Business’ and the three winning entries were able to demonstrate this in their entries.
The three prize winners were:
- Lynda Atherton from the Nepean Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) who wrote an essay describing the a program used to identify the source of a multiresistant organism transmitting to babies in the NICU and the strategies that were put in place to reduce the risk of transmission.
- Sarah Webb from Royal North Shore Hospital Intensive care Unit (ICU) submitted a poster titled ‘Improving Hand Hygiene in Intensive Care’. The poster highlighted the ICU focus on improving hand hygiene compliance, and described their comprehensive approach to improve this compliance and make the project sustainable.
- Donna Benedet, Staff Educator from the Thomas Holt Village submitted a very lively and fun Rap dance describing the strategies used by staff at her facility to adhere to Infection Prevention and Control principles.
